Suffolk Gets New Race Schedule

Three Day Racing Schedule approved August 14, 2015 By Seth Daniel-Revere Journal The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) approved a three-day racing schedule and a $1.425 million withdrawal from the state’s new Race Horse Development Fund to supplement the meet’s purses, but some 350 local horsemen have withdrawn from their organization and are protesting the move. “We supported the industry every year for 20 years with the hope that one day gaming would come to the Commonwealth and help our industry,” said Bernie Bramante of Medford, who recently signed on with the new organization, the Massachusetts Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. “Now, the money is here and we don’t have a shot at it. Now that it has come, the plan is to give it to a bunch of people from out of state.” That was the unanimous reaction from many of the locals in the industry who felt they had been ripped …

Suffolk Downs help included in Bill

Racing may return to Suffolk Downs Story by the Revere Journal House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo joined Representative RoseLee Vincent and their colleagues in the Massachusetts House of Representatives to pass a supplemental budget which allocates additional funding to critical programs and initiatives – including a critical provision to help racing return to Suffolk Downs. The legislation will allow horse racing and simulcasting to continue at Suffolk Downs until 2016, if approved by the Senate and the governor. It would also creates greater flexibility in payment structures to allow for relocation or training of horses, and related operations.

Suffolk Downs marks its final day of live races

By PHIL MARCELO  Boston.com / Associated Press   BOSTON (AP) — Suffolk Downs, New England’s last thoroughbred horse track, celebrated its storied past with a series of tributes Saturday on its final day of live races. The once-grand Boston track recognized some of the most famous horses, jockeys, announcers and performers during its nearly 80-year history with live and video presentations. Among those highlighted were ‘‘Eddie Wrack,’’ the horse that won the track’s inaugural race in 1935, and ‘‘Seabiscuit,’’ the legendary Depression-era thoroughbred that won a major race held there in 1937. The track, which will continue to offer simulcast betting until December, also cleared out its promotional inventory, selling vintage souvenirs and other memorabilia. Sale proceeds will benefit CANTER New England and the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, which help horses transition to life after racing.
