Beach Basics
Is Revere Beach free to visit?
Yes. Revere Beach Reservation has no admission charge. Parking availability, MBTA fares and purchases from local businesses are separate. Check posted parking signs and the Revere Beach parking guide before arriving.
What are the hours for Revere Beach?
Massachusetts DCR lists Revere Beach Reservation as open from dawn to dusk. Facility, restroom and lifeguard hours may be shorter and seasonal. Confirm current information on the official DCR Revere Beach page.
Why is Revere Beach historically important?
Revere Beach opened as a public reservation in 1896 and is recognized as America’s first public beach. Its history includes the Narrow Gauge railroad, grand hotels, amusement rides, dance halls and generations of local food traditions. Visit the Revere Beach history guide.
Can visitors swim at Revere Beach?
Yes, swimming is a principal seasonal activity when conditions allow. Before entering the water, review the current beach status, weather, tides and posted instructions. Lifeguards are seasonal and visitors should never assume one is on duty.
When are lifeguards on duty?
DCR normally staffs Revere Beach during the main summer waterfront season, but exact dates and coverage can change. Check the current DCR waterfront-services schedule.
Are restrooms available?
DCR lists restrooms and bathhouses among Revere Beach facilities. Hours vary by season and staffing. The Shirley Avenue and Oak Island bathhouses are useful landmarks, but visitors who depend on an accessible restroom should confirm availability with DCR before traveling.
Source priority: Beach rules, hours and facilities follow Massachusetts DCR. City streets and permits follow the City of Revere. Event details follow the current organizer. When sources disagree, this guide favors the agency responsible for that subject.
Getting Here and Parking
How do I get to Revere Beach from Boston without a car?
Take the MBTA Blue Line toward Wonderland. Beachmont, Revere Beach and Wonderland stations serve different portions of the shoreline. The trip makes Revere Beach one of the easiest ocean beaches near downtown Boston to reach by rapid transit. Use the Revere Beach MBTA and bus guide for live departures and connections.
Which Blue Line station is best for Revere Beach?
Use Revere Beach station for the central boulevard and many restaurants, Wonderland for the northern beach, pedestrian bridge, hotels and bus connections, and Beachmont for the southern shoreline and neighborhood businesses. Check the destination guide on the transit page.
Is Revere Beach close to Logan Airport?
Yes. Revere is immediately north of East Boston and Logan Airport, making it a practical coastal stop or lodging base for a Greater Boston visit. Travel time depends heavily on traffic and the exact terminal or hotel, so use live directions rather than relying on a fixed estimate.
Where can visitors park at Revere Beach?
Limited visitor parking is available in signed portions of Revere Beach Boulevard, generally first come, first served. Additional paid parking may be available at Wonderland station. Ocean Avenue and the inland side of parts of Revere Beach Boulevard are resident-permit areas. Review the full parking guide and obey the sign where you park.
What does “Resident Permit Parking Only” mean in Revere?
It means the space is reserved during the posted hours for vehicles with the appropriate City of Revere digital resident or visitor permit. It is not general beach parking. Some streets are resident-only overnight; others are resident-only 24 hours or during specified daytime periods. The posted sign controls.
What are the parking hours and limits on Revere Beach Boulevard?
DCR currently lists a four-hour limit and a 9–10 a.m. no-parking period on the signed section from Eliot Circle to the Revere Street area near 320 Revere Beach Boulevard. It also lists no parking from 10 p.m.–7 a.m. on the ocean side from Revere Street to Carey Circle. Street sweeping, snow emergencies, construction and events can add restrictions. Always read current signs.
Can a visitor park overnight on a residential street?
Citywide resident-only overnight enforcement is generally midnight–6 a.m., excluding holidays, and some streets have stricter restrictions. Guests of Revere residents may need a digital visitor permit. Beach visitors should not treat residential streets as overflow parking. See the City’s current parking program.
What is the easiest way to visit during a large festival?
Use the MBTA when possible and allow extra time. Road closures and temporary parking restrictions are common during major events such as the International Sand Sculpting Festival. Check the event calendar and the organizer’s current transportation notice before leaving.
Rules and Accessibility
Are dogs allowed on Revere Beach?
DCR prohibits dogs on Revere Beach from April to mid-September. Seasonal dates and protected-shorebird closures can change, so confirm the current restriction with DCR and follow every posted sign.
Are grills, fires or alcohol allowed on Revere Beach?
No. DCR lists fires and alcohol as prohibited. That means visitors should not bring grills or other open-flame cooking equipment. Littering is also prohibited.
Can I fish at Revere Beach?
Fishing is available along the coastline, but Massachusetts requires an appropriate fishing license. Review state licensing and any posted seasonal wildlife protections before fishing.
Are portions of the beach ever closed?
Yes. Sections may close or have restricted access to protect piping plovers and other coastal resources. Water-quality advisories, severe weather, maintenance and special events may also affect access. Check today’s beach status.
Is Revere Beach wheelchair accessible?
DCR identifies paved walkways, restrooms, seasonal beach mats and beach wheelchairs. Mats are currently listed at access points 6, 31, 33 and 37. Two sand chairs and two floating chairs are listed for Revere Beach, subject to staffing, weather and availability. See the accessible Revere Beach visitor guide.
How do I borrow a beach wheelchair?
DCR says visitors can speak with lifeguards or contact MassParks in advance at 617-626-1250 or [email protected]. Chairs are kept at the Shirley Avenue Bathhouse near access points 5 and 6 and the Oak Island Bathhouse near access points 36 and 37. They are free, first come first served, and require a companion to push and assist with transfers.
