2016 Sand Sculpting Comes to a Close

REVERE — America’s oldest public beach got a little sandier this week.

Onlookers, wannabes, and pros converged on Revere Beach Friday to watch, learn, and compete in the 13th annual International Sand Sculpting Festival.

But before the crowds arrived, the competition needed sand.

And in the world of Northeast sand sculpting competitions, there’s no better stuff than the decomposed granite dust that’s trucked in from a quarry in Hudson, N.H.

Organizers ordered nearly 500 tons of the sand, which is silty, sparkly, and soft to the touch. Unlike Revere Beach’s sand, the New Hampshire quarry’s is not rolled and rounded by the waves. It’s more durable, and easier to shape and carve.
